Freeland High Graduate Drowns In Township Pond 6-14-2010

A 2010 Freeland High School graduate died Sunday afternoon while retrieving a disc golf Frisbee from the pond at Tittabawassee Township Park.
Police said Dennis D. Gatz, 18, was with friends who were searching the pond for the mis-thrown discs, when he went under just before 3:30 p.m.
"One of his friends made a frantic effort to get him out of the water," said Tittabawassee Township police chief Dennis Green. "However, he wasn’t strong enough to get him out."
The Saginaw County dive team pulled Gatz's body from the water about an hour afterward.
WNEM TV5 reported there was a no swimming sign near the 3-acre pond that read “entry into water prohibited at all times.”
Investigators at the scene said Gatz was not a strong swimmer as wasn't able to get himself out of the water.
Gatz was a member of the school’s wrestling team and graduated with his senior class on June 3.
He was also a member of the National Honors Society and defensive tackle on the football team.
“He was a really nice young man and he was a son, a brother and this is truly a loss for the community of Freeland,” said Freeland School Superintendent Matthew Cairy.
Grief counselors will be at the school for students who are wrapping up their final exams.
Funeral arraignments have not been announced.
