Group Collects 20,000 T-Shirts For Haitians 6-15-2010

Victims of the devastating earthquake in Haiti are still struggling to put their lives back together, but they’re getting a bit of help from Mid-Michigan.
Thousands of T-shirts have been sent from the Great Lakes Bay region, from cities such as Lansing and Flint, where extra shirts from events that didn’t get sold or given away were donated to Haiti.
Students and volunteers bagged, packed and loaded more than 20,000 T-shirts onto a tractor trailer Tuesday with a one-way ticket to Miami.
The Leadership Genesee of Flint group sponsored the T-shirt drive in April, but at the time no one knew how to get the shirts from Flint to Haiti.
The group found a husband and wife team involved in the scrap booking business who planned to drive to Florida this week for a scrap booking convention.
Following the convention, Kay and Dallas Fisher will drive into Miami and drop the shirts off.
“He likes to help, [but] I thought he was crazy,” said Kay Fisher, talking about her husband volunteering to drive the shirts south. “We have to go there anyway and why not help?”
Leadership Genesee has also made arrangements to get the shirts transported from Miami to Haiti.
“Helping each other out, that’s what it’s all about,” said Dallas Fisher.
The largest donations of shirts came from the moving company Two Men and a Truck, based in Lansing, after workers saw TV5’s original story on the shirt drive in April.
