Crews Demolish 750 Homes To Fight Urban Blight 6-15-2010

Saginaw is continuing the process of demolishing hundreds of vacant and abandoned homes across the city.
The city recently ramped up its efforts to fight urban blight.
Six crews are hitting the streets every day and more than 750 homes have been demolished in the last 12 months.
Block by block, two- to three-man teams operating heavy equipment turn dangerous abandoned homes into vacant lots.
Many residents in the neighborhoods targeted for demolition told WNEM TV5 they were glad to see the homes destroyed.
Neighbors often stand around as the crews do their work and said they’ve waited for years for the blighted residencies to come down.
The project is being funded largely through federal stimulus money and the city hopes to get even more funds next year to help fight blight.
