Union 699 Workers Say No To UAW-Nexteer Deal 6-18-2010

United Auto Workers 699 at Nexteer Automotive voted down a new labor contract that would have cut employee wages and created about 500 jobs.
Officials said 65 percent of the union workers voted against it during Thursday's voting. UAW Local 699 has around 2,200 members.
If the contract had been approved, the average hourly cuts would have been about $2, while skilled trades employees would have seen cuts of $8 per hour.
Workers would have also lost a pay raise they received in January, for a one-time payment of $5,000.
"We believe the proposed contract would have allowed Nexteer to retain manufacturing jobs at the Saginaw site and enhance its competitive position," said Mike Gannon, Nexteer Automotive vice president of business strategy and human resources. "We are disappointed that the contract was not ratified."
New contract negotiations will take place next year when the current contract expires.
