Flint-Area Soldier, 24, Killed In Afghan Fighting 6-18-2010

A 24-year-old soldier from the Flint area has been killed in fighting in Afghanistan.
Sharps Funeral Home in Swartz Creek said Army Spc. Joseph D. Johnson died Wednesday in combat in the northern Afghan city of Kunduz.
Johnson was born in Flint and graduated from Carmen-Ainsworth High School in 2004. He enlisted in the Army in 2006 and went to Afghanistan in December. Johnson was set for discharge from the Army this coming December.
Grandmother Glenna Maxwell of Flint Township said she's "extremely proud of him and the sacrifice he has made."
Johnson's parents Dennis and Teri Johnson live in Genesee County's Mundy Township.
Funeral services are to be held at Central Church of the Nazarene once Johnson's body returns home from overseas. Visitation will be held at Sharp Funeral Home on Miller Road in Swartz Creek. Dates for the two events have yet to be announced.
Thirty-three American troops have been killed in Afghanistan this month.
