Threat Forces 3 Courthouses To Increase Security 6-21-2010

Courthouses in Tuscola, Lapeer and Genesee counties were put on alert Monday after officials said they learned of a threat against the locations.
The threat came in the form of a letter, mailed to the Mayville Police Department, warning that a group of armed men would attempt to storm the buildings.
Tuscola County prosecuting attorney Mark E. Reene told WNEM TV5 the letter received by authorities warned of “a potential threat to the Tuscola County Courthouse on June 21.”

A variety of enhanced security measures, including extra patrols, have been implemented at the courthouse, according to Reene.
Despite the threat, court proceedings still continued throughout the day. Local sheriff and police departments stepped up their security in the three counties.
“We have extra man power in and outside of the building -- just to protect the citizens if something were to happen,” Caro police chief Brian Newcomb said.
Deputies could be seen armed with automatic weapons manning doors and rooftops at the courthouses.
People using the court said they weren’t bothered by the sight of heavily armed officers.
“Everything is fine, normal,” said Genesee County resident Tina Davis. “I felt no threats or anything.” The high security is expected to continue Tuesday.
It’s unknown at this time if any other county courthouses in Mid-Michigan were placed under alert.
Reene said the person or group of people responsible could face numerous charges.
The high security is expected to continue Tuesday.
