Thieves Take Midland Family's Building Supplies 6-21-2010

WNEM TV5 has learned about $230-worth of 2-by-4 wood studs were stolen from a Midland family’s home this weekend.
TV5 has chronicled how the Spegel family is trying to adopt their three grandchildren from the Florida foster care system.
To do so, the state Department of Human Services told Dan and Mary Spegel they must first build an addition onto their home on Wackerly Road.
In the last few weeks, numerous businesses, builders and volunteers have donated all the necessary materials to help build the addition.
The Spegels were unable to complete the work themselves due to financial problems.
Now, someone has stolen 100 2-by-4s out of a trailer parked at the Spegels' home. A single wooden beam was left by the thieves.
“It was pretty devastating because we desperately need these to finish the project,” Mary said. “These were already donated…so what, are we going to ask people to give us more?”
It turns out they didn’t have to. As soon as some TV5 viewers heard about the setback, they offered the family cash to replace the stolen lumber.
The Spegels said they could use even more help getting their addition done, because the clock is ticking.
June 29 is when the addition to the house must be finished in order to go forward with the adoption plans.
"I refuse to let myself think that we've gotten this far and these kids will remain in foster care," Mary said. "After we done all this -- it can’t stop now."
Anyone wishing to make a cash/check donation (must designate on check Spegel Adoption) can do so by calling 989-837-9757 or making them payable to Caregiving Network, and mailing them to 607 Gordon Street, Midland, Mich. 48640.
All donations are tax deductible.
