New Budget, Amendment Approved In Bay City 6-22-2010

The Bay City Commission on Monday night approved the budget for the 2010-2011 fiscal year, and passed an amendment giving unions more time to accept concessions in labor contracts.
The original budget called for the layoffs of 21 city employees, including police and firefighters. However, commissioners unanimously voted to delay layoffs if any union is able to reach a tentative agreement with the city that includes 10.8 percent in concessions by June 30.
Any employees that may be laid off after June 30 can be recalled if contract agreements are ultimately reached by Aug. 30, officials said.
The city is currently facing a $1.6 million budget deficit.
