Firefighter Training Day Held At Area Apartments 6-22-2010

BAY COUNTY, Mich.Local firefighters grabbed their gear for a special training day Tuesday in Bangor Township to learn how to deal with some of the worst fire situations imaginable.
Residents at Bangor Township’s Bay Manor apartments woke up to a sight that would make most feel the urge to flee.
But after a few minutes, residents like Dorothy Goss, who’s lived at the apartments for over a decade, learned there was nothing to fear. “It’s for our safety,” said Goss.
The Bangor Township Fire Department is in the process of planning their response to different structures in their coverage area.
That way, officials said they can get their job done quickly and efficiently in the case of a real emergency.

The Bay Manor apartments were built in the 1960s and are one of several complexes that would pose a challenge for firefighters, should a blaze break out.
“We want to lay out some hose to make sure we can reach different areas and see what the best approach is going to be to attack a fire,” said Bangor Township fire Capt. Mike Galloner.
Terry Brandow agrees with his neighbor Dorothy Goss and said he doesn’t mind the morning commotion. “It’s kind of nice to have them checking the place out,” said Brandow.
Both Brandow and Goss said a little noise during the day will help them sleep better a night, knowing their firefighters know their building, inside and out.
“It just makes me comfortable,” said Brandow. “They’re here and doing a good job.”
The training took several hours, and traffic in the area wasn’t disrupted.
