Bay City Council Overides Mayor's Veto 7 To 2 6-23-2010

A special meeting to discuss Bay City Mayor Charles’ Brunner veto of the city’s budget was held on Wednesday.
At Wednesday’s meeting, Bay City commissioners over rode the mayor’s veto by a vote of 7 to 2.
Brunner said he issued the veto because he didn’t want see any more cuts to public safety and said laying off police and fire fighters is dangerous.
“I don’t think there is anything more important than being safe in your own home,” said Brunner.
Monday, the commission approved the budget for the next fiscal year.
It includes the layoffs of as many as 21 city employees if their unions don’t make concessions.
Among those on the chopping block are five firefighters and six police officers.
As it stands now, those layoffs will happen, unless there is a tentative deal between police and fire put before the June 30 deadline.
If an agreement can be made, there will be no pink slips sent out July 1.
Count on WNEM TV5 for continuing coverage of the Bay City budget battle.
WNEM.com will have the latest updates on potential layoffs as the concession deadline approaches.
