3 More Boaters Rescued From Saginaw River 6-24-2010

The U.S. Coast Guard rescued three boaters who fell into the Saginaw River near Channel Island Wednesday afternoon.
It’s the second time in a week Coast Guard crews rescued stranded boaters near the island.
According to a news release, the three boaters fell into the river after their 17-foot Javelin began taking on water just after 3 p.m.
The Coast Guard Station Saginaw River received a distress call via cell phone and launched a rescue crew aboard a 41-foot utility boat soon after.
"Cell phones, while popular, are not consistently reliable in the boating environment and especially in a boating emergency," said Frank Jennings, Jr., recreational boating safety program manager for the Ninth Coast Guard District in Cleveland. “Cell phones are helpful, but when boating, they should be considered a last line of defense for emergency communications.”
Jennings said all boaters should use marine band radios.
All three boaters were wearing life jackets and were transferred to emergency medical personnel.
