Adoption Deadline: Will Home Pass Inspection? 6-29-2010

A local couple who needed to finish an addition on their home in a quest to adopt three of their grandchildren met the state's deadline Tuesday.
The state Department of Human Services told Dan and Mary Spegel they must first build the addition onto their home in Midland before attempting to adopt the grandchildren from the Florida foster care system
Since the story first aired on WNEM TV5, the Spegel family has been assisted by area volunteers and contractors donating time, money and expertise over the last three weeks.
Dan and Mary needed to add two bedrooms and a bathroom to their house by June 30 or their grandchildren could be adopted by another family.

Dozens of TV5 viewers have also offered help through donations and manpower ahead of the deadline.
The Spegels sought help with their situation because they recently filed for bankruptcy after Mary battled cancer.
If the new addition passes inspection Wednesday, the couple will be allowed to legally begin the adopt process of their grandkids.
