MDOT Dials Back Roadwork For Fourth Of July 6-29-2010

With the Fourth of July holiday weekend fast approaching, the Michigan Department of Transportation said it is clearing more than 65 percent of lane restriction near construction zones.
But several dozen construction areas will remain active and drivers will also have a new law to deal with on the road.

TV5 viewer Joel Erdman said he spends a lot of time on the road, surrounded by a sea of orange barrels.
Erdman has some advice for drivers this holiday weekend. “Be patient, and enjoy the ride,” he espoused.
Many of the road projects that will be active are here in the Great Lakes Bay Region.
Resident Larry Strawn said he has the family and their fifth-wheel travel trailer headed out of town for the long weekend. “We’ll take our time and be careful,” said Strawn of his plan to fight heavy northbound traffic.
Another tricky aspect to the coming holiday is the state’s new ban on driving while texting.
Police are expected to be out enforcing the law.
“We want the people on the road to be safe and pay attention to the road,” said Michigan State Police Sgt. Lance Cook. “And we will be watching for texting drivers.”
MDOT suggests any drivers who run into trouble with construction pay close attention to any posted detour signs.
