1-2 Punch Delivered To Michigan's Unemployed 6-30-2010

Nearly 90,000 Michigan residents could lose their unemployment checks by Saturday if something isn't done to extend federal benefits.
And now Senate Democrats plan to take a different approach to give them some help.
The plan is to write one bill containing both the unemployment package and an extension of a popular tax credit for people who buy new homes.
That would give homeowners who signed purchase agreements by the end of April until the end of September to complete the purchase, and qualify for federal credits.
Meanwhile, there was more bad news for Michigan’s unemployed.
The state has announced it will scale back a popular worker retraining program.
Starting Thursday, new enrollment in the No Worker Left Behind program will be limited largely to those already in classes, and the 20,000 people already on a waiting list.
A 39 percent cut in federal work force money that pays for a large part of the program led to the change.
