More Bay City Unions Could Face Layoffs In August
All eight of the city’s unions, and non-union employees, were asked to make a 10.8 percent in labor cuts. As a result, approximately 15 city employees -- including five police officers, will not be reporting to work since a tentative contract agreement was not reached by the June 30 deadline.
"Unfortunately some of those bargaining units couldn’t come to terms with the 10.8 percent we were looking for," Mayor Charles Brunner said. "We had to have a balanced budget and because of declining revenues -- this is what we had to do.”

Nearly two dozen more employees could be laid off if contracts are not ratified. However, city officials said any pinked slipped employees could be called back to work if contracts are agreed upon by Aug. 31.
The city is facing a $1.66 million budget deficit going into the 2010-2011 fiscal year, which began July 1.
The layoffs are not expected to effect federal funding grants they city has previously received.
