Sheriff: New Budget Would Cut Deputies, Services 7-01-2010

Saginaw County William L. Federspiel went before the County Board of Commissioners Wednesday asking them not to approve a proposed $1.2 million cut to his department budget.
The cuts included the loss of 15 sheriff’s deputies and the end of 24-hour-a day coverage.
"I've looked at these numbers, it's disheartening. It's disheartening to me," Federspiel said.
Commissioners are mulling over two plans.
Option A would pink slip 15 deputies, while option B would eliminate 12 corrections officers and beds at the county jail.
Either way, Federspiel said programs and mandated services are in real jeopardy.
"We've shown that we're able to make do right now,” he told WNEM TV5. "But we've been cut drastically over the last 10 years."
The commissioners are looking to curb the county’s $6.4 million budget deficit. They are eying cuts in several departments, including animal control, public works, treasurer’s, clerk’s and emergency services.
County leaders will make a final decision on where to cut in late September.
The fiscal year starts Oct. 1.
