Deputies Begin To Enforce Texting-Driving Ban 7-01-2010

Think twice before texting behind the wheel. As of today it’s against the law
TV5’s Liz Gelardi rode along with the Saginaw County Sheriff’s Department to see how the ban will be put into action on the road.
“If we happen to drive up next to somebody and see them texting, it gives us a good reason to pull them over,” said Sgt. Mark Garabelli.
Pulling someone over for the violation isn’t that easy. Garabelli said it can be hard to figuring out if a person is on the phone or texting.
While Gelardi was in the patrol car, Garabelli pulled over two people. Both claimed they were not sending messages behind the wheel.
One person said she was using the phone to call her dad. Garabelli didn’t believe her, but there was no way for him to prove she was texting.
“She said she wasn't texting, she was dialing the phone to talk to her dad. She showed me the phone there were no texts on it but then again there was no evidence she was dialing her phone again either,” said Garabelli.
The next person he pulled over had just sent a text. She showed Garabelli the phone and the evidence was right there.
“There was a call at 12:43 to her grandma but there's also a text at 12:45 so she was texting,” said Sgt. Garabelli.
Garabelli wrote the woman a $100 ticket.
Before she pulled away he told her to, “drive safely and stop texting.”
