Local Couple Clears Mess Left By Firework Goers 7-05-2010

They were a sight to behold, fireworks shows lighting up Mid-Michigan skies over the Fourth of July weekend.
But who is responsible for the cleanup?
Since Monday is a holiday for most municipalities, many cases the aftermath was left to volunteers. WNEM TV5’s Craig McMorris caught up with two of them hard at work in Saginaw.
Janet and Tom Taylor left their Saginaw home armed with trash pick up thongs and plastic bags en route to Saginaw’s Hoyt Park.
"I think we should do something for the city," Janet said. "It’s just something you should do."
The retired couple spent hours picking up empty beverage bottles, worn-out fireworks and fast food bags.
Tom had another reason he wanted to come out and clean up the park. He told TV5 he wanted to honor those who served in the United States Armed Forces.
The Taylors said they didn’t need any thanks for the efforts, they just did it because it needed to be done. But some park walkers TV5 talked with thanked them anyway.
"I commend them and I think we all should come together and do the same thing," said Tacha Stephens, of Saginaw.
The idea is supported by the Taylors, they hope other residents will follow their lead and volunteer some time.
The couple also thinks if the city of Saginaw would erect signs in the park next holiday asking people to properly dispose of their garbage things wouldn’t get as bad.
