Rapid Progress Made On Bay City's New YMCA 7-09-2010

In a little over a month, a lot of headway has been made in construction of the new Dow Bay Area Family YMCA.
A symphony of construction sounds reverberates in the shadow of the Bay City Hall on Washington Avenue. Workers have dug out a foundation and walls are going up on the new "Y".
Officials said the project is well on its way to completion.
The intense heat wave Mid-Michigan endured earlier this week had workers on the project looking out for one another.
"Oh, we got to keep an eye out on each other,” said construction worker Rick Brooks. “You know, a lot of people try to tough it out, and really, you're responsible for looking at other people."
People who walk or ride their bicycles by the project are impressed by how fast the structure is going up.
"I guess it's a neat thing,” said passerby Dave Francis, of Bay City. “A little bit of progress in this town. We could use some structural work, I guess."
Jack johnstone, bay city "I think it's a good idea,” said Bay City’s Jack Johnstone. “Keep the kids off the street, keep them out of trouble."
The director of the local Red Cross works across from the project and she said she can't wait for the new community center to open.
Jennifer idalski, red cross "It's nice to see a new building going up,” said Jennifer Idalski, with the Red Cross. “It'll make everything look good. I'm also a member of the Y so I’m excited to see what it's like on the inside when it's done."
The facility is scheduled to open for business by next summer. When it opens the location will employ nine people full time, with about 20 part-time jobs.
