Murder-Suicide In Mt. Pleasant Leaves 2 Dead 7-14-2010

Police in central lower Michigan said an apparent murder-suicide that left two men dead may have been a case of mistaken identity.
Mount Pleasant police said that Kim "Kemp" Luchie, 25, of Mount Peasant, was shot multiple times inside The Cabin restaurant about 10:45 p.m. Tuesday.

They said Justin Luckhardt, 32, of Shepherd, fled the scene at a high rate of speed and later crashed his car as he failed to negotiate a curve on Crawford Road.
Officers said they found Luckhardt outside the vehicle with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Police said a Glock semi-automatic .357 handgun, an SKS 7.62 x 39 caliber assault-type weapon and a Kevlar bullet resistant vest were found inside his vehicle.
“With the amount of weapons that he had and the ammunition he had in the car, things could have been much, much worse,” said Isabella County Sheriff Leo Mioduszewski. “It was a very tragic situation, but there could have been a lot more casualties had he chosen to start spraying gunfire throughout the restaurant.”
Both men died at a hospital and authorities said their investigation is ongoing.
Police said Luchie was sitting with three other co-workers at the Cabin, one of whom was Luckhardt's married sister-in-law.
Authorities said the motive for the encounter appears to be marital problems, but emphasize that they think the shooting was a case of mistaken identity and do not believe the victim or shooter knew each other.

Grief counselors from the Isabella County Crisis Intervention Team were on hand to assist witnesses.
Autopsies were performed Wednesday on both men but the results were not immediately released.
Mount Pleasant police said the homicide is the city's fourth in the past 15 years.
A fund is being set up at the Fifth Third Bank in Kemp Luchie's name because his mother recently lost her job and can't afford the funeral.
