Sheriff: Craigslist Used To Rob, Carjack Victims 7-14-2010

The Genesee County Sheriff said one adult and two juveniles are facing multiple charges for posting an ad on the Craigslist website and then robbing and carjacking those who responded.
The site is used by many to purchase and sell anything from furniture to automobiles.
The three are accused by authorities of offering a discount on a new iPhone, but when potential customers showed up to purchase, they were robbed at gunpoint.
Genesee County Sheriff Robert Pickell said 18-year old Darius Brown was the gunman who was in contact with the potential buyers, 15-year-old Jacobi Morris had a gun, too, pulling it out of a backpack, and 17-year old Bobby Kyles acted as the lookout.
The Craigslist ad was posted on July 1 offering a serious deal on a new iPhone -- $300 for one phone, or two for $500.
The first person to respond was a Flushing man. The daytime meeting took place near a church where Brown claimed to work.
Authorities said the three stole $200 cash and carjacked the man.
Police said, two hours later, a Macomb County couple was robbed and the trio took their car, too.
Three days later, authorities said two men from Lansing were robbed, but were able to flee the scene in their vehicle.
An officer with the Flint Police Department noticed the string of robberies in same area and teamed up with the Genesee County Sheriff's Department to set up a sting. That’s when the three were finally arrested.
"Everyone is looking for a deal,” said Pickell during a news conference Wednesday. “Good things can happen on the Internet, and as many good things that can happen -- bad things can happen."
All three have been charged as adults with conspiracy to commit armed robbery, a charge that, if convicted, carries a life sentence. The three were also indicted for carrying a concealed weapon and felony firearm.
Additional charges are expected on the carjacking claim.
Authorities believe there are at least five other victims of the scam that still have yet to come forward.
