UAW Endorses Lansing's Bernero For Governor 7-19-2010

Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero has been immersed in politics for most of his life.
His gift for gab and passion for helping people has taken him from high school class president to county commissioner, state lawmaker and now mayor. He's hoping his next job will put him in the governor's office.
Monday, the United Auto Workers union announced it is throwing its support behind Bernero, a big boost in his quest for the democratic nomination.
During his five years as mayor, he has managed to reach agreements with police and firefighters that have cut costs while avoiding layoffs.
While some city unions are upset with him, the 600,000-member Michigan AFL-CIO and its 59 unions back his bid for governor.
Meanwhile, the Lansing mayor was endorsed by Equality Michigan Action Network, the state's largest advocacy group for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.
Bernero said the discrimination his gay brother faced before dying of AIDS is one reason he strongly stands up for gay rights.
Bernero supported a 2006 human right ordinance in Lansing that bans discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity and supported similar measures as a state lawmaker.
His 29-year-old brother, Victor, died of AIDS in 1990.
Bernero will face House Speaker Andy Dillon in the Aug. 3 Democratic gubernatorial primary election.
