NWS Says EF 0 Tornado Struck Mid-Michigan 7-19-2010

The National Weather Service confirms tornados touched down at the tip of Michigan's rural Thumb and in the Cadillac area of the northern Lower Peninsula.
The weather service said Monday a weak tornado with 80 mile per hour winds hit the ground about 10:10 p.m. Sunday at Lighthouse County Park. It's in Huron County's Huron Township, about 70 miles east-northeast of Saginaw.
There was little reported damage in the tornado's two-mile path.
Another tornado with 65 mph winds touched down Sunday three miles south of Cadillac in Wexford County. It tore the roof off a building at a lumber yard.
Officials were checking Monday to see if damage in the Houghton Lake area was from a tornado or straight-line winds.
One witness to the storm who TV5 spoke with, Wil Craig, said he was home at the time the storm hit. "I [saw] this really white horizontal rain, and just about that time I heard a limb from that big tree out back hit the house -- that woke us up quick," said Craig.
TV5 meteorologist Catherine Bodak said the severe thunderstorms that moved through the area were capable of producing damaging winds in excess of 60 mph.
"It threw these limbs clear over to the corner of the property," said Craig.
Although the winds were strong, Craig was thankful it was the only damage he saw.
"One of those big trees could have crashed down upon our house and pinned us [inside],” said Craig. “That could have been worse. Thank God we got spared this time."
Now that summer severe weather season is under way, Bodak said it is always important to stay up to date with the latest watches and warnings issued in your area.
