Woman To Stand Trial In Husband's '09 Slaying 7-21-2010

A Bay City woman accused of killing her husband was back in court Wednesday, and a judge decided there was enough evidence against her to go to trial.
Rebecca J. Shimel, 45, is charged with open murder and felony firearm in the shooting death of Rodney L. Shimel.
Last month, Shimel rejected a plea deal that would have dropped her charge to second-degree murder.
Rodney L. Shimel, 48, died of multiple gunshot wounds in the upstairs bedroom of the couple's North Sheridan Road home on Dec. 28, according to WNEM TV5 records. Police said the couple’s four children were also home at the time of the shooting.
Shimel has been in jail since last December following the shooting incident.
During Shimel's preliminary exam, police said they found Rodney Shimel's bullet-riddled body in the couple’s upstairs bedroom.
“I went out to Mrs. Shimel in the patrol car, gave her Miranda rights. She said she shot her husband more than once,” said Bay City Police Detective John May.
Medical examiner Dr. Patrick Cho, of Oakland County, said Rodney Shimel was shot nine times.
Cho said one of the bullets penetrated his brain, another went through his heart. “There were eight gunshot wounds to the back and one to the victim's head,” said Cho.
Shimel's defense attorney Ed Czuprynski said his client was a longtime victim of domestic violence.
“The police had been at the house many times for domestic violence,” said Czuprynski. “And how many times can that happen to you before you react to protect yourself?”
With evidence of eight shots to the back and one to the head, the judge has ruled there is probable cause to believe a crime was committed and bound Rebecca Shimel over to circuit court to stand trial.
If convicted, Shimel could spend the rest of her life in prison. No trial date has been scheduled yet.
