Lush Flower Gardens Bring 'Little Bavaria' To Life 7-22-2010

Every spring, cities and towns across the country recruit community volunteers to plant flowers along their streets and sidewalks.
However, Frankenmuth has taken city beautification to a spectacular new level.
The city’s Main Street is lined with overflowing gardens that bloom from May to August and span more than three miles.
More than 400 locally-grown hanging baskets, each weighing 50-90 pounds, flood the street of colors in hues of yellows, reds, purples, blues and greens.
"One look at this amazing display and it’s clear that residents and business owners take great pride in our community," says Jamie Furbush, president and chief executive officer of the Frankenmuth Convention & Visitors Bureau.
The Frankenmuth Visitor & Welcome Center is the centerpiece of the display.
Officials said there are more than two dozen varieties of flowers and plants in the gardens surrounding the center.
Additional whimsical topiaries, including a snacking elephant and an eight foot tall chicken created with 6,156 flowers, are located along Main Street.
