Neighborhood FarmersÂ? Market Opens In Saginaw 7-23-2010

An area that might be considered to some experts as a "food desert” now has a neighborhood farmer's market for fresh produce and vegetables.
The Houghton-Jones Neighborhood Association was recently awarded a $5,000 grant from the Saginaw Community Foundation to create a neighborhood farmer's market.
The neighborhood market's grand opening is set for 3 p.m. Friday.
It will continue for eight weeks every Friday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Houghton-Jones Resource Center, located at 1708 Johnson St.

Organizers hope to make healthy, local food more accessible to everyone in Saginaw while supporting community development.
“Everyone understands that eating fresh fruit and vegetables is important, but I think a lot of people don’t realize how difficult it is to access these,” Brain Thomas said. “Even a distance of a few miles can make accessing fresh vegetables difficult.”
The market is a satellite location of the Downtown Saginaw Farmer’s market. Both stands take SNAP/EBT/Bridge Card payments.
The first 25 people at the grand opening will also receive $1 off coupons.
