MDOT Probes Several I-675 On-Ramp Crashes 7-28-2010

A rash of fender benders and a string of complaints about the Interstate 675 on-ramp from State Street in Saginaw to southbound I-675 have prompted Michigan Department of Transportation engineers to investigate.
Motorists were complaining that merging onto southbound I-675 was dangerous.
“[It] takes one person to stop first, [but] both want to be first, so they end up hitting each other,” said Claude Wills, a Saginaw resident.
The problem stems from drivers attempting to merge onto southbound I-675 from State Street, which can be a tight squeeze, especially with construction narrowing the freeway to just one lane.
Wills said he's had several close calls using the on-ramp.
“It's too short and narrow,” said Wills. “I've seen a couple of accidents, not major ones, but fender benders.”
Those who are traveling south on I-675 have to be paying close attention to deal with quick merging traffic from the on-ramp.
“With the cars coming off, that ramp is a problem,” said motorist Mary Kinasz. “Either the ramp is not made right or the people aren't using it right.”
MDOT engineers said construction work and drivers going too fast are contributing to the issue.
“We're looking at the ramp right now,” said MDOT’s Gregg Brunner. “With some signage and some minor changes, [that] should take care of the problem.”
MDOT said motorists who may be exceeding the speed limit are compounding the problem, and construction work on I-675 should be wrapped up this November.
MDOT asked that motorists slow down when using the on-ramp, and extend courtesy to other drivers to help reduce the risk of accidents.
