What's That Smell? TV5 Clears Up Mystery Stink 7-28-2010

Some Saginaw County residents found themselves overwhelmed by a foul odor Tuesday. It was stinky and a bit of a mystery.
TV5 had numerous e-mails and Facebook messages asking, “What’s that smell?”
“It was a bad, terrible smell,” said Ora Wilkins of Spaulding Township.
“It was foul; it was bad, really bad,” said Carrie Schultz of Saginaw Township.
Although many people smelled it, no one seemed to know where it came from.
“[I'm] still wondering. I'd really like to know 'cause it's just very different, and I've never smelled it,” said Schultz.
Wilkins noticed the smell in Spaulding Township around 10 a.m., TV5 employees noticed it in downtown Saginaw around 5 p.m. and Saginaw Township residents started to notice the odor around 9 p.m.
“Yesterday, winds were from the southwest about 5 to 15 mph, so being northeast of the source -- probably not a good idea,” said TV5 Chief Meteorologist Darrin Bradley.
After some investigating, TV5 found what could be the source of this smell: A farm in St. Charles is spreading 110 acres of field with pig manure.
Once TV5’s Liz Gelardi tracked down the stench, she described it as unpleasant.
“I think I've lost my appetite for the rest of the day,” said Gelardi.
