Modified Grant May Bring Back Bay City Officers 7-30-2010

The Bay City Police Department will be allowed to rehire three laid-officers who were let got due to city budget cuts less than a month ago.
Officials with police department said a 2009 federal grant it received last year for the hiring of new officers was modified so the laid-off officers could be brought back.
The Department of Justice agreed to adjust the $650,000 grant to allow for a lower staffing level than originally agreed upon.
On July 1, nearly 20 city employees were laid off, including five police officers. The police force went from 57 to 52 patrol officers.
Published reports said the City Commission will review the modified grant to make sure it doesn’t require any matching of funds before it will be approved.
Just last week, the police union paid for two new billboards that lashed out at city officials over the decision to spend $1.6 million to replace City Hall's roof.
The billboards on Saginaw and Columbus streets and on Euclid read "City Hall's Roof will not stop you from getting: Beaten, Shot, Stabbed, Robbed. 5 Laid Off Bay City Cops Could Have!"
The billboards also show a masked gunman with the words: "POSSIBLE. The result of Bay City Commissioners laying off five police officers."
