Voters In Saginaw County Face Tough Choices 8-03-2010

Four major tax renewals will be on the ballot Tuesday in Saginaw County.
Saginaw voters will decide on a renewal of the five-year, 6-mill public safety tax first approved in May 2006. Tuesday’s ballot also includes a 1.5-mill increase over the same span.
City officials said if the renewal passes and the addition doesn’t, the city could lose 10 police officers and firefighters combined. If both fail, Saginaw could lay off dozens more public safety officials. If the only the addition passes, both proposals would reportedly fail.
Voters will also cast a decision on a mill renewal for the Castle Museum of Saginaw County History. The tax would cost the owner of a $100,000 home about $10 a year. The Castle currently employees 14 full-time and part-time staff members.
If the tax is rejected, voters would likely see it on the Nov. 2 ballot again.
Residents will also decide on a 3-mill Saginaw Transit Authority Regional Services bus system tax for five years and a four-year .01615-mill renewal for Saginaw County Parks and Recreation.
This tax would cost the owner of a $100,000 home about $8 per year.
