Cousin Versus Cousin In November Election Race 8-04-2010

As a result of Tuesday’s primary, two cousins will face off against each other in a Mid-Michigan political race.
Timothy Gnatkowski and his second cousin Ronald will vie for a seat as a trustee for Carrollton Township.
It may sound like a story straight from the hills as two members of the same family running for the same office.
Tim Gnatkowski, 51, a Republican, said he filed for the position first. “Nobody filed suit until almost a week later, and then I found out at that point when I looked on the county's website as far as everyone who was registered that I was running against my cousin," said Gnatowski.
Ronald Gnatowski is a 66-year-old Democrat who has previous political experience as a school board member. “Tradition has it that Carrollton is more Democratic than anything, so I think I have a little bit of an advantage there," said the Democrat.
There isn't any bad blood between the cousins, at least, that's what they told TV5 reporter Craig McMorris.
"[When] We see each other, we say ‘Hi,’” said Tim. "[When] we see each other in the store, we talk with each other."
"It's no big deal,” said Ron of their political differences. “We're friends, and we'll always be friends."
Tim was the only Gnatkowski who sprung for signs for the primary, and he said that Ronald benefited from that, an allegation Ronald disagrees with.
"Not really, because he has his first name on it,” said Ronald. “My name's Ron, not Tim."
While the two claim different political parties, they're united in their thoughts on trying to make Carrollton Township a better place to live. And they don't anticipate any rift in the family, no matter who wins in November.
"Whether I win or he wins, it's a Gnatkowski that's going to be on the board," said Tim. The two cousins said they may decide to have an election night party at the same location.
