Homeowner Shoots Would-Be Robbers, Kills 1 8-05-2010

A homeowner took extreme steps to protect himself after police said he shot three teens, killing one of them, when they allegedly tried to rob him in his driveway.
Police said a 17-year-old teen was shot when he and a group of friends tried to rob Sheldon Golden at the corner of Salley Court and Susan Street in Flint around 11 p.m. on Wednesday.
“I heard the shots,” said a neighbor of Golden’s. "There was nothing nobody could do or say."
Moments before the neighbor heard the shots, the 54-year-old Golden was standing in his driveway and talking with a friend of his daughter when five males suddenly appeared.
Authorities said one of them, a 17-year-old, pulled out a gun as the group rushed the two and said out loud it was a robbery. But Golden surprised them when he pulled out a gun of his own.
Police said Golden shot and killed the 17-year-old and injured two other teens, one a 16-year-old.
Authorities said both are said to be in good condition at an area hospital.
"When you're scared, you'd rather defend yourself than be the person that gets hurt,” said Darryl Knott, who lives in the neighborhood.
Golden and his daughter's friend were not injured.
Apparently this was not the first incident at Golden's house. Neighbors told TV5 that his house had been robbed at least six times in the past two months.
TV5 spoke with the sister of the 17-year-old about the incident and friends said the teen got mixed up in a bad crowd. Neighbors said the teens live in the neighborhood.
The two teens who were injured are in police custody while the prosecutor reviews charges.
