What Makes Serial Killers Tick? TV5 Investigates 8-11-2010

WNEM TV5 has been covering the serial stabber in Flint since the story first broke and now we’re asking the experts -- what makes a person like this tick?
Trying to get inside of the mind of a serial predator is a difficult thing.
Stephen Thompson, director of Sexual Aggression Services at Central Michigan University, said the motives behind serial crimes fall into several categories.
The serial stabber seems to be taunting and tormenting Flint and finding the reason behind it is what profilers like Thompson do to help authorities find their attacker.
“This guy is a revenge guy. When the majority of his targets are African-American, that is called symbolic victimization,” said Thompson. “[There’s] got to be something there that’s driving him.”
So far, investigators said the attacker has stabbed at least 20 men, killing five. With the exception of three, all have been black men.
Survivors have described the suspect as a tall, white man with a muscular build.
Meanwhile, the task force searching for a serial killer linked to a string of 20 stabbings that include five deaths is putting together a list of potential suspects.
Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton told The Associated Press the task force is making progress in the search for a man believed responsible for the stabbings.
Leyton said police are "working hard to whittle down the potential list of individuals" in the case.
The task force is headed by Michigan State Police and now includes the FBI. It has received 469 tips as of Wednesday afternoon.
