Feds To Tour Closed Standish Max Prison Today 8-16-2010

Federal prison officials are considering purchasing the Standish prison, and they'll be in Mid-Michigan again -- starting Tuesday to tour the facility.
Last year, the prison was officially closed after being considered as a place to house federal detainees from Guantanamo Bay in Cuba.
Now, federal officials are considering adding the shuttered facility to the federal prison system.
"During their tour of the prison last fall, federal officials recognized what we in Michigan already know -- Standish Max as a top-notch facility with an impeccable safety record,” U.S. Rep. Stupak said. “While this is not yet a done deal, it is a huge step in the right direction toward reopening this prison."
According to the news release, the federal prison system is currently operating some 37 percent above its capacity.
State budget cuts forced Standish prison to close last October. Its capacity was 604 inmates.
Officials will also talk with nearby property owners. There must be a half-mile buffer zone around the facility for it to be a federal regulated prison.
WNEM TV5 will have continuing coverage of the latest developments concerning Standish Max as soon as they become available.
