State Releases List Of Worst Public Schools 8-16-2010

Michigan education officials have identified 92 persistently low-achieving schools, a large share of them in Detroit.
Schools on the list released Monday will have about 90 days to submit a turnaround plan to state officials.
Those that are rejected could wind up under state control in a statewide school reform district.
Michigan's academic reform office could end up in charge of several individual schools or several schools within a district, depending on whether improvement plans are accepted or rejected.
More than 40 of the schools on the statewide list are in the city of Detroit.
Nine of the schools are from the Mid-Michigan region.
The school takeover plan is one of several changes signed into state law earlier this year.
Schools were ranked based on a federally approved formula that includes results on standardized tests.
The following local schools were on the state's list:
  • Beecher Community School District -- Beecher High School
  • Buena Vista School District -- Buena Vista High School
  • Flint City School District -- Northwestern High School
  • Flint City School District -- Northern High School
  • Mt. Morris Consolidated Schools -- E.A. Johnson Memorial High School
  • Saginaw City School District -- Thompson Middle School
  • Saginaw City School District -- Saginaw High School
  • Saginaw City School District -- Ruben Daniels Middle School
  • Westwood Heights Schools -- Hamady Community High School

One bright spot to Monday's list is the absence of Saginaw's Arthur High School, which had previously been listed.
