Commissioners Approve 2 Public Safety Grants 8-17-2010

Public safety departments in Bay City will be getting a needed financial boost.
Bay City Commissioners voted Monday night to approve two different federal grants.
The first grant approved was for the fire department, worth more than $830,000. Part of the money will be used to rehire two laid-off firefighters.
The second grant will allow the city to rehire three laid-off police officers.
"Three doesn't sound like a lot, but it is a lot," said Cpl. Patrick Lochinski, Bay City Police Union president. "It's a big relief off of people's shoulders."
In all, nearly 40 employees were laid off this summer when the city and unions failed to reach agreements that included 10.8 percent in labor cost cuts.
Officials said those being rehired within the police and fire departments will be back to work sometime in the near future.
