GM Makes Splash At Back To The Bricks Fest 8-20-2010

The 2010 Back to the Bricks festival is in full swing and General Motors Co., took center stage.
Representative from the General Motors Foundation and Flint-area GM facilities announced several monetary donations to area charities.
GM presented nine Genesee County charities with checks totaling $75,000 on Friday afternoon.
General Motors' 6,000 Genesee County employees gave big checks to the agencies that they deemed needed it the most.
Agencies like the United Way, which picked up a check worth $25,000.
Those agencies on the receiving end said it's great that GM donated the money, especially right now when it's most needed.
“There is a saying that charity begins at home, so it is fitting that the GM Foundation is making this contribution to help the residents in the Flint area,” said John T. Montford, chairman of the GM Foundation. “GM remains an important part of the Flint area and, as such, is committed to helping residents in need.”
The GM Foundation donation, which is in addition to GM’s local efforts, includes:
· United Way of Genesee County, $25,000 · Food Bank of Eastern Michigan, $10,000 · Clio Area Youth Sports Complex, $10,000 · Tall Pine Council, Boy Scouts of America, $5,000 · One Stop Housing Resource Center (Resource Genesee), $5,000 · Urban League of Flint, $5,000 · Hispanic Technology Community Center, $5,000 · Valley Area Agency on Aging, $5,000 · Big Brothers and Big Sisters, $5,000
The brand-new 2011 Chevy Volt was also on display during the ceremony.
The Volt's new 1.4L direct injected four-cylinder engine is built at a new engine plant at Flint South Powertrain plant.
The Flint factory will also be the exclusive source of the range extending engines for the Volt and Chevrolet Cruise.
GM has invested more than $700 million in eight Michigan facilities to support Volt production since 2008.
The Volt offers a total driving range of about 340 miles and is powered by electricity at all times.
It can be charged in a conventional outlet and is designed to drive up to 40 miles on electricity. When its lithium-ion battery runs low, an engine kicks in to extend its driving range to more than 300 miles without refueling.
The automaker plans to produce 10,000 Volts by the end of the 2010 calendar year.
Officials are also expected to talk about the automaker's efforts to help a number of Flint charities reach more children and adults in need of assistance. WNEM TV5's Brian Wood reported that several grants will be handed out/
Back to the Bricks officials said more than 250,000 people are expected to attend the five-day celebration of cars.
WNEM TV5 will have complete coverage of the 6th annual Back to the Bricks Cruise Festival during our newscasts.
