Working From Home? There's Another Option 8-20-2010

Many people who are self-employed work at home alone, but now they have a way to work with others instead of dealing with the distractions of the home office.
TV5's Eric Jylha went out to find out more about a new business environment called co-working.
Business people working together in a single room Friday morning aren't employed by the same company.
They're called co-workers, entrepreneurs and free-lancers who would rather gather with others instead of working alone at home.
Their web site states that they offer "a smooth blend of the autonomy of a home office, the atmosphere of a coffee shop, and the resources of a library."
Co-working started five years ago in California and has spread to groups in 200 cities around the world. Now it's come to Bay City, the smallest community so far.
"It lets you bounce an idea off another person which you wouldn't be able to do at home," said Mike Weiss, the organizer of the Co-working branch in Bay City.
Here in Michigan, there are three co-working groups in Grand Rapids and one in Ann Arbor.
Sharon Leenhouts owns Medical Data Solutions and she wants to give Bay City's co-working group a try. "I can see this is a good place to bring ideas," said Leenhouts.
So far about 15 people are participating in Bay City, with businesses ranging from designers to photographers. All a participant has to do is show up with their WiFi capable laptop and go to work. The rest is free.
The next co-working gathering is Sept. 15 at 2 p.m. and it will last into the evening. For more information on the group, click here.
