Delta College Attracting Non-Traditional Students 8-24-2010

With a new school year ready to begin at Delta College, President Jean Goodnow delivered a State of the College address earlier this week for faculty and staff.
Goodnow underscored the college's role in the Great Lakes Bay Region and how it plans to serve the diverse student body.
"With the way things are going, I need an education to get me where I want to be," said student Lisa Gutowski.
Gutowski views herself as a non-traditional student and she has chosen Bay County's Delta College to make her dreams come true.
"I'm working two jobs, I have one son and I'm back to school to get my degree," said Gutowski. She's is just one example of how non-traditional students are using Delta College.
Goodnow outlined the improvements in services and how new ideas are making the community college the first choice not only for those going back to school, but for those who are just starting their higher educational career.
"My brother went to school here and he liked it, so I'm here now," said new college student Alicia Black. She's at Delta because she was told it was a good place to learn.
Delta has been selected as one of 100 colleges taking part in the "Achieving A Dream" initiative which retrains people for the jobs of tomorrow.
Traditional and non-traditional students are taking advantage of the recognition.
School leaders are also working on celebrating the school's 50th anniversary of service to the community in 2011.
