Area Firefighters Set To 'Fill The Boot' For MDA 8-24-2010

Local firefighters will once again put it all on the line to raise money for Jerry's Kids. The annual Fill the Boot fundraising campaign kicks off later this week.
When you see firefighters out in traffic with their boots later this week, slow down and, if you feel like it, make a donation.
They're raising money for the Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Telethon on Labor Day.
At least one firefighter told TV5 he doesn't mind the risk of being out in traffic. "No, most people are very courteous and they understand that it's for a good cause, they slow down," said firefighter Brandon Hausbeck. "We ask people when they come upon us and see the cones to be aware."
The Fill the Boot campaign is especially meaningful for one Mid-Michigan teenager that TV5's Craig McMorris had a chance to talk with Tuesday.
Fifteen-year-old Jaycee Dankert has suffered from neuromuscular disease since she was a little girl. "I think it's great for whoever can come out and help and the firefighters, how it's great how they volunteer their time to help out MDA," said Dankert.
And the firefighters said they love donating their time for the fundraising effort. "It's very gratifying, personally, that's why I got in this career to help people," said Hausbeck. "Any chance that we can get at the fire department,t as a union, we love to go out and help people."
The Saginaw-area firefighters raised more than $14,000 for Jerry's Kids last year. They said their goal is to top that mark in 2010.
Firefighters will be out this Friday, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the intersection of Bay Road and Davenport Avenue, and Bay Road and State Street.
They will repeat that schedule the following weekend.
And once again, TV5 is your home for the Labor Day Telethon. The television station will be broadcasting the MDA telethon all day that Monday.
