Flint North Plans Closure; Plant Layoffs Confirmed 8-30-2010

As expected, hundreds of employees of Flint North Powertrain will be laid off by the end of the year, officials said.
Plant Communications Manager Tom Wickham confirmed the layoffs will occur in November, allowing time to "decommission the site" and for management to turn the keys over to Motors Liquidation Company.
In June 2009, General Motors officials announced the facility would close in 2010.
Under the Federal Warn Act, management has to notify employees and elected officials of plans of major layoffs.
There are currently 480 Flint North employees.
Wickham said 80 people have already been assigned to building the Volt and Cruze engines at Flint Engine South.
Of the 400 remaining, 70 will transfer from Flint North to Flint Engine South in November, leaving 330 to be laid off.
A small group of the 330 will remain to shut down plants 5,10 and 81 by the end of the year, Wickham said.
Wickham would not comment on how many of those 330 laid-off workers he expects to transfer to Flint Engine South.
