Mayor Recall Effort Falls Short In Signatures 8-30-2010

An effort to recall Flint Mayor Dayne Walling has fallen short of its goals -- by just over 500 signatures.
Genesee County Clerk Michael Carr told TV5 that there are not enough signatures to put a recall of Walling on the November ballot.
Just over 8,000 signatures were needed to allow the recall to proceed.
By mid-August, the original petitions were verified and the tally was 14,341 signatures submitted. Of those, 8,267 were verified as legitimate and 6,074 as not eligible to count for various reasons. That means the recall could go forward.
But a challenge to that decision was lodged and the signatures were again verified and recounted. This time, an additional 783 names were determined to be ineligible. That dropped the total number of valid signatures to 7,484.
Officials said 8,004 valid signatures were needed for the recall to proceed, which means the effort fell short by 520 signatures.
