Business Helps Community Build Sports Park 9-01-2010

Saginaw's east side is getting some improvements, thanks to volunteers and a grant from an area business.
What they're doing is building a sports and fitness park in an area that was full of boarded-up abandoned houses.
"You gotta have some faith in people, some faith in God," said William Simmons with New Life Baptist Church. "Let God guide and lead you and that's what we're doing."
A $50,000 grant from Lowes helped to make it all happen.
"We want to change lives," said Simmons. "If we can change just one life, we've accomplished that goal."
Lowe's did more than fund the project. The company also provided volunteer labor.
"[We] took a bunch of houses out there, [and] put up a couple of basketball courts," said Lowes's employee Paul Figueroa. "We'll have a grandstand over there, and of course, this pavilion."
New Life Baptist members said they are more than thankful for the assistance to give neighborhood kids a place they can call their own and stay out of trouble.
"[It'll] keep 'em out of trouble, [and give them] something to do," said church member Alexander Brackett. "[It will be] a safe place to come to."
"[We'll have] lots of activities for the kids," said New Life Baptist Church member Linda Brewer. "[And] a place to go so they don't have to play ball in the street."
The grant from Lowe's is the largest grant handed out in Michigan and Indiana. Project volunteers said their dream has come true to offer Saginaw a facility like what was built.
But they said they have many more ideas for making a good idea an even better one.
The volunteers said they should have the pavilion completed soon and will move on to install two more basketball courts.
