Impaired Driving Labor Day Crackdown Begins 9-02-2010

A drunken driving crackdown begins Thursday as additional law enforcement officers prepare to enforce the state's impaired driving laws.
More than 10,000 law enforcement agencies are participating in the nationwide crackdown with nearly 2,400 involved from the Midwest.
Police said law enforcement will be especially vigilant during high-risk nighttime hours.
According to the latest data, 32 percent of fatalities in motor vehicle traffic crashes involved a motorist with a blood alcohol content of .08 or above - an average of one fatality every 45 minutes.
In 2008, nearly 12,000 people died in crashes in which a driver or motorcycle rider was at or above the legal limit.
The age group with the highest percentage of alcohol-impaired drivers in fatal crashes is young people age 21-24, according to police.
The crackdown runs through Sept. 6
