Firefighter Back On Job After Serving Overseas 9-02-2010

A Bay City firefighter is getting a very special welcome home after serving a stretch in the Middle East.
David Jankowiak took a leave from the Fire Department and became a Black Hawk helicopter pilot to fight in Iraq.
Jankowiak saw combat in both theaters of war, in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Jankowiak said he's glad to be back home with his wife and son, and thankful the fire department held his job for him for more than six years while he served in the military.
"Flight school [took] five years at Fort Campbell, Ky., deploy to Iraq for a year, Afghanistan for a year, home [for] five months and [then to] Korea for 15 months," said Jankowiak of his war experience. "Now I'm back home."
Restarting his life as a civilian, the Black Hawk pilot bought a new house for his family.
Jankowiak returned to the Fire Department last Monday and will be working on updating his training before getting back on the fire truck.
"We're proud of Dave for what he's done for us, the country and the department and we think a lot of him," said friend Robert Phillips.
Jankowiak said his dream of flying for the military never would have come true without the support of friends and his family. "My wife, God bless her, went along with it and made it happen," said Jankowiak.
But he also says he's going to keep his pilot's license current, just in case an opportunity arises in the future.
