Oprah Winfrey, who will end her tenure as host of “The Oprah Winfrey Show” in 2011, has expanded her presence from television talk-show host to media queen over the past two decades.
Winfrey -- who has dabbled in acting, appearing in movies that include “The Color Purple,” “Native Son,” “Beloved,” “Charlotte’s Web” and “Bee Movie” -- is president of her production company, Harpo Productions. A branch of her production company, Harpo Films, which signed an exclusive output pact with HBO in 2008, has produced motion pictures that include “The Great Debaters” and “Beloved.”
She has also produced on stage, as well. Winfrey is listed as one of the producers of the Broadway version of “The Color Purple,” which opened in 2005. Winfrey previously appeared in Steven Spielberg’s 1985 motion picture version of the novel. She received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Sofia.
Winfrey is also dabbling in written and online media, as she produces two magazines, “O, the Oprah Magazine,” and “O at Home.” She also has a Web site, Oprah.com. The site houses content related to her television show, magazines, book club and charities.
In 2006, Winfrey expanded her presence to the radio. She signed a three-year deal with XM Satellite Radio to start a new channel, Oprah and Friends.
Most of Winfrey’s time is still spent on television. In addition to hosting her talk show, she also co-founded the women’s cable television network, Oxygen, and she is in the process of starting OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network. OWN, which is expected to debut in 2010, will replace the Discovery Health Channel.
Winfrey’s projects have given her a reported net worth of more than $2.3 billion. She has given back some of her earnings through charitable giving, including “Oprah’s Angel Network,” a charity she established in 1998 to encourage people to make a difference in the lives of underprivileged individuals. Winfrey also established the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls, which opened in South Africa in 2007.
