Trial Begins For Man Accused Of Torturing Girl 9-14-2010

The trial of a Mount Pleasant man accused of torturing a 2-year-old girl in Bay City began on Tuesday.
David Delacruz-Slavik, 28, was deemed competent to stand trial by a Flint psychologist in August.
Delacruz-Slavik faces charges of attempted murder, assault with intent to murder, first-degree child abuse and assault resulting in serious bodily injury for the incident stemming from last October.
Investigators said he strangled, bit and repeatedly punched his girlfriend's daughter, causing her to suffer a stroke and other life-threatening injuries.
Despite the psychologist's findings, his lawyer said he plans to pursue an insanity defense.
