Sex Offenders Found Living Too Close To School 9-15-2010

Parents expect schools to be safety zones for their children, whether they're walking to school or having fun on the playground, and they don't expect to find sex offenders living next door.
But TV5 found them living less than the required by law 1,000 feet from a school.
"It's very easy to walk up and grab a kid on the way to school and snatch them in at 1,000 feet," said Anthony Rogers, an upset father and Saginaw resident.
Living just 491 feet away from a school is Jerome Lewis, a man convicted of raping a child under 13 years old.
It upset Rogers that TV5 discovered three sex offenders breaking the law.
The three live less than the required 1,000 feet distance from Stone Elementary School in Saginaw.
TV5 reporter Julie Banovic went in search of Lewis, to confirm his whereabouts in relation to the school.
"We're looking for Jerome," said Banovic to a man living at a home Lewis is registered to.
The man said Lewis is not home, information a neighbor confirms to TV5, but a woman at the scene tried to tell TV5 that Lewis doesn't live there at all, and told Banovic to leave.
"Well, if he does live here, he lives too close to an elementary school," said Banovic.
"Yeah, yeah thanks for the information," the unidentified woman said.
WNEM also uncovered two other sex offenders, Michael Jones and Anthony Johnson, living too close to the school.
TV5 spoke with Saginaw Police Chief Gerald Cliff by phone on Tuesday. Cliff said he had detectives working on the answers to our questions about the sex offenders on TV5's list.
Questions like, when they come to register with the department, who makes sure they are 1,000 feet away from a school. And, if they're found in violation later of being within that 1,000 feet, what is the process to make them current.
When TV5 receives Cliff's answers, we'll update this story.
