Group Protests Potential Sheriff Dept. Cuts, Again 9-21-2010

Saginaw County Commissioners will vote Tuesday night on ways to curb a projected $6.6 million deficit before the new fiscal year starts Oct. 1.
In all, 51 county government jobs are on the line -- but the sheriff's department is facing the largest budget cut.
County Controller and Chief Administrative Officer Marc A. McGill has recommended laying off up to 16 sheriff's department personnel, many of them experienced road patrol deputies.
Saginaw County Sheriff William L. Federspiel has been openly against the proposal and has even outlined other ways the county could possibly save money.
Federspiel warned that layoffs "will be dangerous" for public safety county-wide.
Five animal control workers are also in jeopardy of losing their jobs because of funding cuts to the Saginaw County Animal Care Center.
Organizers began their second informational picket Tuesday morning outside the Saginaw County Governmental Center to protest the potential cuts.
The rally is expected to wrap up by 5 p.m.
A few dozen protesters gathered last Friday to protest the cuts, too.
