Virg Bernero Makes Mid-Michigan Campaign Stop 9-27-2010

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Virg Bernero brought his “Fighting for Main Street” tour to Flint on Tuesday.
The Lansing mayor spent the morning talking and addressing a full crowd at the Brown Sugar Café, on Saginaw Street. During the event he reiterated that manufacturing is still key to Michigan's economy and that one of his top goals is to keep taxes in line.
"It's not just about taxes, it's about a skilled workforce, infrastructure and education," he said. "I have an agenda to grow this economy."
Bernero admits that he's running behind in the latest polls, but says the only poll that's important to him is the one on Election Day. A public policy poll released last week showed GOP candidate Rick Snyder holds a 52 to 31 percent lead, with 16 percent still undecided.
A spokesperson for the Snyder campian issued this statement Tuesday afternoon," "Unlike Mayor Bernero, Rick Snyder will eliminate the jobs-killing Michigan Business Tax and replace it with a flat, fair and easy to administer 6-percent corporate income tax. This plan will cut business taxes by $1.5 billion and would exempt small businesses altogether.."
Meanwhile, Bernero said he would restore the appointment of the state agriculture director to the Agriculture Commission if elected governor.
Bernero said Monday morning during a Michigan Public Radio Network program hosted by Rick Pluta that agribusiness is flourishing and the commission has done a good job appointing past directors.
Bernero said he'd have no trouble reversing Gov. Jennifer Granholm's executive order that gave the governor responsibility for the appointment.
He also says he would ask for more belt-tightening at state universities while restoring the Michigan Promise college scholarship program.
Republican gubernatorial candidate Rick Snyder will take questions from Pluta and listeners on Friday morning.
